The project won the 2nd prize in the international timber pavilion competition 2022

Timber Pavilion

The pavilion’s design combines standard pieces of lumber to create a multi-sensory spatial experience inspired from wood frame construction methods and New York City’s tall buildings. Through exhibiting an exposed structural exoskeleton otherwise not typically seen in buildings, the pavilion’s exterior contrasts significantly with its soft interior to express the versatility of wood as a natural building material.

The exterior truss design is driven through the typical size parameters found in standard rough-sawn lumber, while the interior boards connect these trusses in an oval shape for an increased structural integrity and a heightened experience as natural light cascades down into the setback shape.

Together, these elements take the rudimentary characteristics and possibilities of wood as a building material to form a symbiotic relationship between the exterior and interior, all the while hearkening back to history of wood frame construction as the monumental structure is contextualized against the Manhattan skyline beyond.
